Preserving the Glow by Caring for Your Candles

Dec 9th 2023

Candles can turn any space into a serene sanctuary, enveloping it with warmth, light, and, often, delightful fragrances. But a little care is necessary to ensure they shine their brightest and last as long as possible. Embracing the romance and luxury of candles also means respecting their delicate nature and understanding the nuances of their maintenance.

Burning the First Time

The initial burn is crucial for every candle. Aim for a melting pool that spans the width of your candle to prevent tunneling in future burns. Depending on size, this may require letting your candle burn for a few hours. A consistent melt pool ensures an even burn and maximizes the candle's lifespan.

Trimming the Wick

Before each lighting, take a moment to trim the wick to about a quarter of an inch. This simple act can prevent the wick from mushrooming and producing smoke. Shorter wicks ensure a cleaner burn, prevent high flames, and reduce soot on the candle glass.

Being Mindful of Burn Time

Allowing a candle to burn for too long can cause the wick to shift, leading to an uneven burn in the future. Generally, it's advised not to let candles burn for more than four hours at a time. After this, the wax becomes too hot, risking the fragrance oils to evaporate faster, reducing the candle's aromatic potency.

Ensuring a Safe Environment

Place your candles away from drafts, vents, or strong air currents. This can cause uneven burning and rapid wax consumption, but it's also a safety hazard. Always burn candles on a heat-resistant surface and ensure they're placed on a stable foundation. Keep them away from children, pets, and flammable objects.

Storing Candles Properly

If you're not planning to use your candle immediately, store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to preserve its color and fragrance. Keeping it in its original packaging or wrapping it in tissue paper can prevent dust accumulation.

Extinguishing Candles with Care

Instead of blowing out your candles, consider using a snuffer or gently dipping the wick into the melted wax using a non-flammable instrument and straightening it again. This method reduces smoke and ensures the wick remains centered and upright.

Embracing the Beauty of Candle Fragrances

For scented candles, try rotating them occasionally to ensure you always experience their full aromatic potential. Much like wearing the same perfume every day can make it less noticeable to you over time, burning the same candle continuously can dull its scent to your senses. Change things up, and you'll appreciate each unique fragrance even more.

Reuse and Recycle

Consider repurposing the container once your candle has burned down and only a small amount of wax remains. Clean it out and give it a new life as a holder for makeup brushes, pens, or small plants.

In flame and wax, a timeless elegance harks back to simpler times when candles were the primary source of light in homes. Today, they’re less about utility and more about mood, ambiance, and even self-expression. By caring for your candles, you ensure their luminous glow remains a beacon of tranquility in your space, telling stories of warmth, history, and a touch of luxury.
